Google Webmaster Tools and Domain "Ownership"

Google seems to have changed the way it handles domains and has managed to effectively break itself in the process

For some sites / domains I'm using domain.tld, so I want all URL references to appear as domain.tld and NOT www.domain.tld.

Previously this wasn't an issue. I could just set the preference in Google Webmaster Tools and move on

Now I'm getting this really stupid message:

Yes. I've had this problem before. It's definitely a bug and they know about it.

You can verify easily through a DNS record or you can stop the www. redirect, verify, then add it back.

Funnily enough I was seeing the exact same thing this morning but was thinking I was being a bit of an idiot

I had the same problem a while ago, ended up having to verify both widgets.com and widgets.com before I could tell google I preferred widgets.com
